The Franconian metropolis of Nuremberg is a major historical city of Bavaria. The city is a tourist attraction for guests from all over the world. In the narrow side streets and spacious arcades, historical sights are centrally located next to numerous museums and cultural institutions and shopping centres.
The Kaiserburg, the city's landmark, whose intact 5km-long castle wall encircles today's Old Town and the famous Main Market Square, where the world-famous "Christkindlesmarkt" is held at Christmas time, forms the center of the city. The Franconian bratwursts and also the Nuremberg gingerbread are legendary and taste not only the Franconians but also the multicultural guests from all over the world.
Dürer's house is the only artist’s house in Northern Europe that still survives in largely original form from the Renaissance. This is where Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), one of the greatest figures in European art history, lived and worked from 1509 to 1528. It also offers a unique sense of the lifestyle of the city's burghers during Nuremberg's golden age.
Nuremberg Castle (Kaiserburg) and Albrecht Dürer are indelibly associated with Nuremberg. But there are also many other interesting sights to be discovered. In the picturesque old town, Romanesque and Gothic churches, fountains, monuments and markets are within walking distance of each other.
Nuremberg is the business, service and cultural centre of Northern Bavaria with a total of some 3.5 million residents , and the heart of a cosmopolitan urban region. The Nuremberg Economic Region’s strong points are in the IT and medical industries, and in developing technological solutions for applications in energy, transport, and medicine.
The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region offers a vast range of options for university-level study – from fine arts and music, to artificial intelligence, to medicine, engineering and business administration. Nuremberg alone has some 24,000 registered students at the moment. If you go beyond the city limits to the Metropolitan Region, the figures grow still further. The area has a total of 20 university-level educational institutions, 50 research facilities, and some 100,000 students.
